Norwegian Fjords Cruises

Waterfalls, cliffs, and midnight sun
Overview

Why Norwegian Fjords?

Norwegian Fjord cruises are the single most visually dramatic itinerary in European cruising. Ships sail into narrow fjords between 3,000-ft cliffs with waterfalls cascading down the walls. Geiranger and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Book balcony cabins — cruise-day scenery from your cabin is the entire point (same as Alaska). Book June or July for the midnight sun (24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle). May and September are shoulder — cheaper + much more aurora-friendly if you time a northern extension.

Viking Ocean Cruises does Fjords particularly well — Norwegian-built, Norwegian-staffed, scenic routes priority. Also small-ship so it can enter narrower fjords where Princess or Celebrity cannot.

Planning

How to plan it

  1. Balcony cabin required — same logic as Alaska
  2. Midnight-sun viewing: Jun 21 ± 3 weeks, north of Trondheim
  3. Bergen + Flåm rail journey is a legitimate bucket-list add-on
  4. Pack layers — fjord temperatures swing 15°F in a day
