Our Take

Why we recommend this tour

The Grand Palace is Thailand's most visited attraction, and also its most common tourist scam zone. Without a legit guide, you get intercepted by "it's closed today" touts who redirect you to tailors + gem shops. Skip this entire nonsense by booking a tour.

The Palace itself is the former royal residence, contains Wat Phra Kaew (the Emerald Buddha), and is visually stunning — gold, detailed murals, ornate roofs. Allow 2 hours minimum.

Wat Pho is across the road and holds the 46m-long Reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf, plus the birthplace of traditional Thai massage (on-site massage for ~$10 is legit and excellent).

Dress code is strictly enforced: covered shoulders, knees, and no exposed midriff. You'll be turned away and have to rent a sarong at the gate.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is the "Grand Palace is closed" line really a scam?+
Yes. If a tuk-tuk driver or "official" tells you the Palace is closed for a Buddhist holiday, they're lying. It's open 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM every day except royal events.
Dress code — really enforced?+
Strictly. Shoulders covered, knees covered, no sheer/see-through. They have rental sarongs (100 baht deposit) if you forget.
Include Wat Arun too?+
Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) is across the river, 20 min extra. Many tours offer it as an add-on — worth it if you have the stamina.
How hot is it?+
April-May: brutal (38°C+). November-February: pleasant (28-32°C). Go early (tour starts 8 AM typically) to avoid midday heat.
