Our Take

Why we recommend this tour

The Tower of London is 1,000 years of English royal history in one walled complex, and the Crown Jewels vault is the single most valuable artifact collection open to the public anywhere. Crown Jewels line moves fast (moving walkway) but the approach line can hit 30+ minutes midday.

Book the Beefeater tour — the Yeoman Warders are retired military with 22+ years of service, their tours are free with admission, and they are genuinely excellent storytellers. The morning tours (10:30 and 11) are less crowded than afternoon.

Plan 3 hours minimum. 4 if you want to combine with Tower Bridge (separate ticket, opposite bank). Traitors' Gate and the Bloody Tower (Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh) reward slow viewing with the included audio guide.

FAQ

Common Questions

Crown Jewels — worth the line?+
Yes. The collection includes the Imperial State Crown (still used at State Openings of Parliament), the Sovereign's Sceptre with the Cullinan I diamond (largest clear-cut diamond in the world), and the Kohinoor set in the Queen Mother's crown.
Is the Beefeater tour included?+
Yes, always. They run every 30 minutes from 10 AM and are free to join. No reservation needed — just show up near the central lawn at the start time.
How does this compare to Buckingham Palace?+
Different experiences. Tower = 1,000 years of history, always open. Buckingham = current royal residence, summer-only for interior tours, smaller collection. Most visitors do both.
Kid-friendly?+
Yes, kids love the knights' armour in the White Tower and the ravens. Torture exhibit has mild gore — fine for 8+.
