Our Take

Why we recommend this tour

Mt Fuji is 2 hours from Tokyo on a good traffic day and 4 hours on a bad one. Doing it independently by train requires 3 transfers and a bus. This tour is the "take my money" option for anyone who has 1 day and wants to see Fuji without a planning spreadsheet.

Honest expectation setting: Fuji is visible on roughly 50% of days, less in summer (June–August are the worst months for clear views due to haze). October–February give the highest clear-view rate. Check the weather forecast before booking a non-refundable date — the tour still operates in cloud, you just see the mountain from lower angles and in fog.

Lake Ashi and Owakudani are legitimately worth the day even if Fuji hides. The pirate ship is cheesy but the views are real, and the ropeway over the volcanic valley is a proper lifetime photo. The black eggs (cooked in 80°C sulfur springs, naturally turn black) are a fun weird snack, though the taste is just… egg.

Tour ends back in Tokyo around 7 PM. Budget dinner AFTER the tour — the included lunch stop is mid-day and mediocre. Do not add a 2nd activity on the same day; you will be fried when you get back.

FAQ

Common Questions

What if Mt Fuji is hidden in clouds?+
The tour operates regardless. You will still do Lake Ashi and Owakudani (which are great in their own right). If you specifically booked for Fuji views, you can rebook to a different date with notice, but there is no "refund for clouds" option.
Can we go to the Fuji summit?+
No. The 5th Station is at 2,305m (halfway up). The actual summit climb is a separate 2-day trekking activity, July–September only, and requires a different tour entirely.
Is the bullet-train return worth it?+
If you hate bus rides — yes, it saves 45 minutes. If you are fine on a coach, skip the upgrade. The coach is comfortable and has WiFi.
Is this doable as a day-trip with kids?+
Yes, but 12 hours is long for young children. Recommended for ages 8+. Under 5 may find it exhausting.
